The paper describes how the areal distributions of three kangaroo species (Macropus spp.) in Australia can be re-expressed in terms of their climatic characteristics using the modelling capabilities of SIMPLE. SIMPLE is a computer system which integrates modelling techniques with the data base and mapping functions of a geographic information system. Two modelling techniques suitable for modelling the presence and absence of entities, namely classification trees and logistic regression are explored.
