Abstract

The thesis of this article is that the Revolution is characterized by a form of political culture of the printed word in which newspapers and pamphlets existed in equilibrium, the one means of communication supplementing the other. It is argued that this balanced use of newspapers and pamphlets differs significantly from the seventeenth century, when pamphlets were the dominant medium for influencing political opinion, and from later periods, when newspapers largely eclipsed pamphlets in political importance. The focus of this article is the Ami du Roi of the abbé Royou and his sister, Madame Fréron. The offices of this paper produced clerical and royalist pamphlets in tens of thousands, and in a few cases, around one hundred thousand. The main pamphleteers published by the Ami du Roi were Cazalès and Maury. The publications that had the largest press runs were the papal briefs of the spring and summer of 1791.
