Abstract

The 1981 Census of Population was the first in England and Wales to use an automatic editing imputation system. Following its use, checks were carried out by the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys to assess the quality of the imputed data. Overall, the checks indicated that the automatic editing system performed well. This paper gives details of the results from the checks carried out, together with a brief description of the system used.
