Abstract

Population surveys are compared with medical sources, in particular general practitioner and hospital records, as a means of collecting data about the population's health and its usage of the health services. The major emphasis is on the measurement of morbidity, and hence on a review of the role of general morbidity surveys and of surveys concerned with specific illnesses. However, in order to indicate the wide range of application of survey methods in the field of health, a brief account of some other types of health survey is also included.
