Abstract

In former classifications of shorelines emergence and submergence have been used as the most important elements. However, the shifting sea levels of Quaternary time with the present intermediate condition could have left indications of both emergence and submergence along almost any coast. Furthermore, the criteria commonly used to classify coasts are in part open to question. A new system is introduced in this article which attempts to overcome many difficulties of the older classifications. While this system is entirely genetic, it was devised so as to allow its ready application to many coasts merely from the information which is contained in maps and charts.
