Abstract

Plasmodium elongatum has a daily cycle with the peak of segmentation occurring between 8 and 10 A.M. In contrast to other malarias, this parasite is capable of living in all blood and blood-forming cells of the canary, including granular leukocytes. Although all of the asexual stages are found in all of the blood and blood-forming cells, the vast majority occur in cells of the erythrocyte series; the gametocytes are found only in normoblasts and erythrocytes. Only the parasites in cells with obvious hemoglobin produce pigment. The elongate merozoites of this Plasmodium resemble those of the coccidia. The systematic position of this Plasmodium and its relations to the cells it inhabits are discussed. Some of the relations among the blood-forming cells in these canaries are commented upon.
