Abstract

"Disenchantment" with the world is not simply the result of religion being replaced by science. The loss of a "magical vision" occurs within religion itself. This process is best illustrated by a comparison between the religions of China, India, Judaism and Christianity (especially in its puritan form). For the time comes when man must choose between attributing an ethical sense to his action as an expression of God's will, or deciding in favor of the meaning that he himself imposes on the world through his actions.
