Abstract

Volker Braun, born in Dresden in 1939, has been featured in "Texts and Documents" before (Monatshefte 78 [1986]: 7-10). But this prolific and influential poet and playwright, novelist, story-teller, and essayist, who lives in Berlin, wouldn't need an introduction anyway. Braun's "O Chicago! O Widerspruch!" is contained in what he calls his "Werktagebuch," a largely unpublished collection of critical prose and poetry which also includes his already famous verse "Das Eigentum." Both these poems were written in the summer of 1990.
