Abstract

Regional data indicate a large scale alteration in settlement patterning for much of southwestern Colorado during the tenth century. Much of the current information indicates a widespread depopulation of virtually the entire area after the abandonment of the large, late ninth century villages, and prior to the establishment of Chaco era settlements in the A.D. 1000s and 1100s. Based on recent survey research in the uplands near the northern periphery of the Northern San Juan drainage, I propose that although there may have been a noteworthy population decrease in the core areas of the Mesa Verde Region in the tenth century, there were also relatively large populations remaining in discrete upland refugia.
