Abstract

The need for correlation of the natural vegetation types of different countries with a world classification applicable to all areas is long felt. The best set of variables for such a comparison are those associated with the physiognomy and structure of vegetation, with supplementary ecological information integrated into their various categories. In this study, the UNESCO World Classification of Vegetation (1973) is correlated with the principal plant communities of Sri Lanka, as recognized by Perera (1968). Each plant community is then described on the basis of its physiognomy and structure, using the Kuchler (1966) formulae, and they are further correlated with analogous phytocenoses in other parts of the Tropical World.
