Abstract

Theories based on liturgical, social, and, most recently, educational considerations have been offered to account for the employment of double-nave planning at the Jacobin Church of Toulouse in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. However, examination of the architectural, archaeological, and documentary evidence suggests that the church's plan can be explained on economic and structural grounds arising from the Dominicans' poverty in the early thirteenth century and the eccentric configuration of the site given to them for their convent in 1229.
