A new species from Bolivia, Sphagnum inretortum, is assigned to a new section of the genus-sect. Inretorta-because of branch leaves neither truncate nor toothed at the apex but margined by a resorption furrow and epidermal cells of branches uniform in shape and size and lacking pores.
