Abstract

Laboratory-developed host-adapted strains of Nippostrongylus brasiliensis (Travassos, 1914) were used to study variation in number and distribution of ridges on the cuticle of adult nematodes. A rat strain, a hamster-adapted strain, and a mouse-adapted strain were each raised in rats, mice, and hamsters. In addition, immature adult nematodes, stunted nematodes, and nematodes from wild-caught hosts were studied. The only variations observed were in number of ridges in different body regions of the nematode. There were 8 to 12 ridges in the region from the cephalic inflation to the excretory pore and the lateral cervical papillae, but the pattern of distribution of the ridges was constant in all nematodes of this species. Two additional ridges began immediately posterior to the level of the excretory pore. There were 14 continuous ridges present for most of the length of the nematode extending from just posterior to the excretory pore to the last 500 to 600 µm of the nematode where on the left lateral region of both males and females a 15th ridge occurred. In males only, a 16th and sometimes a 17th ridge was found in the last 200 µm anterior to the bursa. This distribution of ridges of N. brasiliensis differed from that found in the few specimens which were obtained of Nippostrongylus rauschi Chabaud and Desset, 1966, N. djumachani (Tenora, 1969), N. magana (Mawson, 1961), and N. typica (Mawson, 1961).
