Abstract

A method is described using 51Cr to estimate the number, the rate of ingestion, and the turn-over time of red blood cells by S. mansoni in vivo. In the mouse, a female worm was shown to ingest about 330,000 RBC per hour, whereas the male ingested only about 39,000 RBC per hour. The worms completely exchanged their cecal contents in about 3 to 4 hr.
