Work reputation is examined as a status determinant in the informal and highly individualized system of gyppo logging. Status relationships based on work reputation are an important means by which gyppo loggers ensure themselves of a continuous supply of contracts and jobs in the absence of institutionalized procedures. The characteristics of work reputation and the process of establishing reputation are analysed. This paper focuses on relationships within the logger group and between loggers and mill operators in the Pacific Northwest.
