Abstract

(1) The population dynamics of Caryophyllaeus laticeps in the definitive fish host Abramis brama is examined in relation to data obtained by the sampling of natural populations of the host and its parasites. (2) The statistical distribution of parasite counts per host is found to be overdispersed, the negative binomial providing a good empirical model for their description. This distribution also proved to be a good model for the description of the spatial distribution of infected and uninfected intermediate hosts. (3) Possible generating processes are considered for the negative binomial distribution in relation to the biology of Caryophyllaeus laticeps and its final host. The processes are based on random and contagious input of parasites into the fish host. (4) The seasonal cycling of the adult parasite population is considered in the light of the feeding behaviour of the age-group of hosts and a temperature-dependent immune response by the fish host is suggested to explain the seasonal variation in the death rate of the adult parasite. (5) A deterministic immigration-death model is proposed containing non-homogeneous immigration- and death-rates to describe the adult parasite population size in a single host. (6) Conceptual approaches to the mathematical modelling of the population dynamics of the life cycle of C. laticeps are discussed.
