Abstract

The National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA) Health Sector Education Section sponsored an interactive session at the 2003 Annual Conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A brief presentation on the preliminary results of a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant profiling NASPAA programs with health concentrations was followed by a panel reaction and audience discussion. The focus of the discussion was to examine the issue of accreditation and its importance to all NASPAA and Accrediting Commission on Education for Health Services Administration (ACEHSA) stakeholders and to ensure comparability in health management education. The invited panelists examined the potential impact for both accredited and unaccredited programs, and audience members provided additional questions for further debate. The identification of best practices and guidelines emerged as necessary for building a foundation to accredit individual specializations with many implications for core master of public administration (MPA) and other degree programs.
