Abstract

Carabid associations of the genus Pterostichus in central Europe were investigated with respect to their size structure. Only assemblages in habitats, such as moors, with no disturbances over a long period had a size structure consistent with competition theory compared with random associations formed by a Monte-Carlo technique. In habitats such as meadows and fields, which are frequently disturbed by human activities, size patterns in Pterostichus associations were not apparent. The assumptions underlying competition based on size ratio theory, and alternative hypotheses, are discussed in relation to the Pterostichus associations.
