Abstract

At least 18 congeneric pairs of birds have been introduced to the Hawaiian Islands. Of these, there were three pairs where both species became extinct. There were nine pairs where one species, and six pairs where both species, survived. Bill length differences were significantly greater in congeneric pairs where both species survived. This, coupled with independent evidence for competition, suggests that congeners must differ significantly in bill length in order to coexist.
