Abstract

A non-equilibrium and an equilibrium population are simulated for determining mij, the Malthusian parameter of Kimura, rij, the Malthusian parameter of Charlesworth, Denniston, and others, and ϱ , the rate of change of phenotypes. A comparison of these rates with the empirical rates of change indicates that mij is a better measure of the rate of change of genotypes than is rij and that ϱ is an appropriate measure of the rate of change of phenotypes. The rates of change of the homozygous and heterozygous dominant genotypes (mij) and the dominant phenotype (ϱ ) are different from each other in non-equilibrium populations, but identical in equilibrium populations (i.e., zero). The concept of fitness has many meanings. No demographic parameter provides a completely unambiguous measure of fitness.
