Abstract

Growth in rats exposed to 220 R of 60 Co γ-radiation on Day 18 of gestation was determined by measuring changes in body and organ weights, total DNA (cell numbers), protein and RNA content of four organs. Average weights of irradiated animals (male and female) ranged from 78-84% of controls at birth to 51% of controls at Day 30. Average weight of irradiated rats was 75% of controls at Day 365. Differences in weights with respect to controls of the four organs, liver, kidney, spleen and thymus were due to significantly less (P < 0.05) DNA (cells) in the irradiated animals. At Day 160, DNA (cells) for the liver of the irradiated males were not significantly different (86%) from controls. Decreases in protein and RNA content of the irradiated organs coincided with periods of mitosis. Growth due to the increased accumulation of cells was extended to at least 60 days postnatally in the irradiated animals for both sexes. Organ weights of irradiated animals when expressed as percentage of body weight were similar to controls at almost every age studied except Day 30. Possible reasons for a shift in the growth pattern and growth retardation in irradiated animals are discussed.
