Abstract

Syrian hamsters were exposed via inhalation to an aerosol of ${}^{238}{\rm PuO}{}_{2}$. Animals were sacrificed at 136 days after exposure and their lungs were fixed in situ, embedded, and sectioned. Collagen distribution and plutonium-particle locations were obtained from autoradiographs stained for collagen using Van Gieson's stain. Stainable collagen accumulated preferentially in the regions immediately surrounding individual plutonium particles and in regions of high-particle concentration.
