Electron microscopical examination of cultured Pleurastrum species revealed two distinct types of mature pyrenoids. This includes the more typical type of a pyrenoid matrix traversed by single bands of thylakoids (P. paucicellulare, P. sarcinoideum) and a second type, the multiple or compound thylakoid type (P. obovatum, P. terrestre, P. terrestre var .indicum,. P. erumpens). The second type has similarities in pyrenoid ultrastructure to that of phycobiont pyrenoids.
