Abstract

Granted the importance of Thomas Mann's reception of C. G. Jung, this article surveys the Jungian perspectives across a range of Mann's most important texts between 1912 and 1947, including Doktor Faustus, before proposing a detailed examination of the "Joseph" tetralogy. Mann's praise of Jung's psychology in the lecture 'Freud und die Zukunft' is related to the primary theme of the novels, the development of individual consciousness. The article shows how the Jungian ideas informing the novel make Mann's self-avowed attempt to 'take myth out of the hands of the Fascists' a problematic one, since Jungian historiography itself can be considered flawed, and Mann's New Humanism is judged to be imbued with the conservative and Romantic values of his earlier work.
