Mating Types in Five Isolates of Physarum polycephalum

Abstract

Of the five isolates of P. polycephalum studied, each displays a different pair of mating factors, and four of the pairs are reported for the first time. The ten mating types are assumed to constitute a single multiple allelic series. However, because one of the five isolates (N.C.) consistently yielded only nonsporulating hybrid plasmodia when crossed with the other four, genetic analyses of these F1 generations could not be made. On the other hand, interisolate hybrid plasmodia from the remaining combinations did sporulate, and F1 results were in conformity with a one-locus, multiple allelic model.
