The rapheless valve, studied by means of light microscopy, SEM and TEM. differs in fine structure from that of all other species of Cocconeis so far investigated. The structure of the areolae and sieve membranes (vela) was compared with that of Cocconeis scutellum, C. sublittoralis, C. dirupta, C. placentula, C. diminuta and an undescribed species from Liberia.
