In the Poa bulbosa aggregate the apex shape of lemma hairs is an important taxonomic character: acute apices in P. pelasgis sp. nova (a substitute for P. sinaica subsp. graeca) and the closely related P. eigii, and obtuse apices in the other taxa incl. the nominate species. The new species has a wide Near East and E Mediterranean distribution area, nearly perfectly known and here shown in a map only on its western section in Greece. The name P. hackelii was often misapplied to this hitherto undescribed taxon; his correct application has to be restricted to probably hybridogeneous derivatives of P. bulbosa and P. pelasgis.
