The economic difficulties of the past few years have led to an intensification of the discussion regarding the possible contribution of the export business to overcome this structural crisis. Especially in the area of small and medium-sized business it is assumed that considerable underutilized export reserves exist. The authors have consequently made a critical analysis of major works that touch upon the fundamental decision of small and medium-sized firms to commence with an export activity for the first time. Having concluded that the present level of research in this direction is disappointing, they indicate first steps to improve the situation, wherein the operationalization of the implemented constructs is given special prominence.
