Abstract

Fidus (Hugo Höppener) was one of the leading gurus of the German Youth Movement around the turn of the century, a well known art nouveau painter and illustrator, a religious sectarian, and one of the founders of the German nudist movement. In the 1920s and early 1930s, he became an ardent admirer of Hitler and his dream to transform all of Germany into a kind of Holy Grail society. This article gives a full account of his biography and his political and artistic endeavours which are, in many respects, representative of the early stages of the so-called volkish revival in Germany.
