Abstract

Architectural and ceramic traits are utilized in the search for origins of aspects of the cultural inventories composing Norton phase components. The investigation of the history and distribution of house forms in Alaska and Asia indicates, as expected, a temporal priority for Asia, but the comparison of specific features is limited due to poor preservation conditions in the sites. Ceramic studies are more successful, with south to north distributions evident in Asia in terms of temporal priority as well as specific attribute clusters. The Norton phase pottery reflects the selection of specific formal and decorative elements from the inventory of Asian ceramics.
