Abstract

Richard Rorty's recreation of pragmatism is a piece with his long and persistent practice of metaphilosophizing The author of this essay proposes that something can be learned about the limits of Rorty's enterprise by comparing it with François Laruelle's transcendental approach to metaphilosophy, which coincides to a considerable degree with what Laruelle calls "non-philosophy". Particular use of Laruelle's notions of "mystics" and "pragmatics" is made to bring out not only the lessons they might provide to Rorty's metaphilosophizing, but also aspects of Laruelle's original thinking.
