The article contains a description of the phonemic system of an Alsatian village dialect whose material has been collected over many years by means of the impressionistic method as well as by making use of a tape recorder. Procedures are discussed in detail. The phonemic inventory is established mainly by applying the commutation test to a narrow phonetic transcription. Attention is drawn to the functional yield of certain phonemes, their possible clusters and distribution. The diachronic investigation, which must also be phonemic, explains certain gaps in the present system. The interplay of the synchronie and the diachronic aspect demonstrates that within every single dialectal system nothing is arbitrary.
