Abstract

This article introduces an approach for modifying the traditional process used to form strategic groups to incorporate demand considerations using buyer substitution along with supply-side factors. The approach improves consistency in selection of supply-side dimensions used in assigning competitors to groups by introducing market-driven selection criteria. External selection criteria are critical since the lack of a systematic approach for selecting strategic dimensions has meant that different individuals have used différent dimensions to define strategic groups in a given industry. This can result in strategic groups that vary in number and composition, providing divergent insight concerning competitors' positions vis-a-vis rivals and appropriate strategy. The article describes the Market-Driven Approach and, using the cigarette industry as an example, illustrates its use. Implications for researchers and practitioners are examined.
