Abstract

During his career as a critic of art and literature, and as a writer of experimental fictions, Carl Einstein had a reputation as one of the most acute critical minds of the Expressionist generation, yet the cryptic complexity of his writing has limited his postwar reception. By examining his relation to Wilhelm Worringer, this essay defines Einstein's influential aesthetics of spatial form on the three levels of aesthetic theory, practical art criticism and narrative practice. In reverse chronological order, the essay projects his art criticism into a reading of his experimental fiction Bebuquin oder die Dilettanten des Wunders (1912, written 1906/09).
