Abstract

The ultrastructure, taxonomy and distribution of Gomphoneis herculeana (Ehrenb.) Cleve and G. eriense (Grun.) Skv. in Skv. & Meyer are considered. Scanning electron microscopical observations indicate G. herculeana has longitudinal lines formed by an internal axial plate, the edge of which is positioned half-way between the axial area and valve margin. This species also has differentiated apical pore fields, a slit-like internal stigmal opening, marginal laminae, and a septum and pseudoseptum at each pole. Cytoplasmic organelles and stages of the sexual process, previously unreported for the genus, are described and shown to be similar to those reported for the closely allied genus Gomphonema. Gomphoneis herculeana var. herculeana appears restricted in the Recent flora to Wyoming and the upper Great Lakes region. Gomphoneis eriense resembles G. herculeana with respect to valve ultrastructure, but differs in size, axial plate width, position of the apical pore fields, and in possessing an undulate raphe. Gomphoneis eriense, which is reported to have a wide geographical distribution, appears restricted in the Recent flora to California and Montana. Consideration of previously reported subspecific taxa of G. herculeana and G. eriense as well as unreported forms has resulted in the description of 8 new taxa (including 1 new species and 7 new varieties) and in 2 new combinations. The systematic position of G. herculeana, G. eriense and their close allies within the genus is discussed.
