Abstract

Continuous registration of electric cerebral activity has shown that in the course of prolonged mental work (an hour's adding-up) the degree of depression of the alpha waves is changed. At the beginning of mental calculations there is a rapid decrease in the alpha index, then this decrease slackens and at the end of the work the alpha index begins to rise slowly towards the value shown during rest. The alpha waves which appear in the course of work are slightly less strong and rather more frequent than during rest. These changes in the alpha index can be attributed on the one hand to habituation at work which reduces effort, and on the other hand to fatigue, which has an opposite result.
