The (J— H),(H— K) infrared two-color diagram has the unusual property of separating the effects of envelope emission and interstellar reddening in T Tauri stars. Applications of this diagram to the study of T Tauri stars include the estimation of E(B— V) for individual stars (provided the reddening law is known), the comparison of T-associations, and the determination of the principal source of brightness variations.
