A survey of the visual brightness and radial-velocity variations of Betelgeuse during the past six decades suggests that major disturbances in the atmosphere are likely to occur during the year or two following the minimum in the six-year radial-velocity curve. A coordinated observing program is proposed for the period during and after the next minimum, which is predicted to take place early in 1984.
