Abstract

Surface photometry of Markarian 231 has been obtained from high-resolution plates in the 17 band. The nuclear region (τ ≲ 10") is found to show a clear two-component structure. The two-dimensional luminosity distribution has been decomposed into the two nuclear components and the main body, and characteristic parameters have been derived for each component. The results of the present study suggest that the host galaxy of Mrk 231 is not a giant elliptical galaxy in the process of assimilating an irregular or late-type spiral galaxy, but a giant spiral galaxy disturbed by the tidal interaction.
