A VLA Search for CO and HCN Emission from z = 4 Quasars

Abstract

A search for CO(1 -0) line emission from nine quasars and one radio galaxy at z≈4 has been conducted using the VLA. Also, one quasar at z = 4.7 was searched for HCN(1 - 0) emission. Velocity coverage was > 2000 kms⁻¹ in all cases. No detections were obtained, with upper limits on peak line flux densities in the 2-5 mJy/beam range. Corresponding upper limits on molecular gas masses are typically several ×10¹¹ M⊙, assuming the standard Galactic CO to H₂ conversion factor and a CO linewidth of 300 km s¹.
