Abstract

A neoclassical model of a monocentric residential economy essentially due to Alonso is used to explain why, typically, relatively rich people live on relatively cheap land. A comparative static analysis indicates which shifts have to be expected from a change in exogenous parameters. While most of the results are known among the profession, it is the approach which seems novel. Geometric analysis is used wherever possible thus reducing mathematical requirements to a minimum.
