Abstract

The Bear Fort site (33SA8) is located in northcentral Ohio on a blufftop overlooking the Sandusky River. The site consists of prehistoric through protohistoric Sandusky tradition components that support the established radiocarbon-dated ceramic sequence and represents four of the five phases of the Late Woodland period. The cultural assemblages document the Eiden, transitional Eiden/Wolf Fort Meigs and early Indian Hills phase occupations of the Sandusky tradition. The Sandusky tradition cultural manifestation is equated with the ethnohistorically documented central Algonquian Totontaratonhronon, one of five groups perhaps comprising a "Fire Nation"/Assistaeronon confederacy.
