Abstract

The relationship between society and politics is often acknowledge, but it is seldom made operational in order to establish the practical consequences of this relationship. This text intends to show how to proceed in order to obtain that operationalization using an experimental field Portuguese society and the conditions to which political action is here subordinated. The case of neopatrimonialism, as a traditional form of domination that still persists with new forms in societies that are peripheric to developed areas, appears as an useful illustration to the propostion that political action is an action conditioned by social characteristics; In order to clarify this point, we define and develop the general conditions of neopatrimonialism as a form of domination, as a specific referential of political activity, as a general model to be applied afterwards to the relationships between society and politics that are most frequent in Portugal.
