A new alpine species of Ixeridium, I. sandsii, (Compositae: Lactuceae) is described and illustrated from Mt Jaya, Papua (Irian Jaya - Indonesia). It is one of five species now recognized from alpine New Guinea and its relationship to the other alpine species is discussed, as are the differing concepts of Ixeridium. A new section of the genus is created to include the two solitary-headed caespitose alpine species, Ixeridium sect. Monocephala.
