Abstract

Subject of this work is a research to verify if the Racial Laws of 1938, besides the human violence, interferred with Jewish artists activity jeopardizing their possibility of expression. We have analysed the racial laws effects on public artist institutions, the polemics and agreements among the organizations of exhibition, like Quadriennale (especially the third of 1939), Biennale, Syndicate as well as the Academies. In spite of lack of specific laws or rules concerning the "artistic world", serious personal initiatives were taken by Ministers, officers. Then we present two artists (selected between a considerable group) and their personal reaction regarding the persecution: Antonietta Raphaël and Corrado Cagli, leading protagonists of the "Scuola romana". Antonietta Raphaël in 1939 with the onslaught of racial persecution sought refuge in Genoa with the help of two collectors, returning definitvely to the capital only in 1952. Corrado Cagli took refuge in Paris and then in New York, became an American citizen, enrolled in the armed forces in 1941 and participated in the liberation of Buchenwald. He moved back to Rome in 1948.
