Abstract

Une acquisition récente du Musée Kestner de Hanovre incite l'auteur à se pencher sur un groupe de quatre statuettes romaines en bronze représentant un jeune nu debout, les bras levés au-dessus de la tête (pl. 4-5). Comme le montre une lampe en terre cuite de Tübingen (pl. 6, 5), ces jeunes gens devaient soutenir des plateaux ronds sur lesquels étaient déposées des lampes. Le groupe semble être une création du classicisme augustéen, inspirée du style sévère grec. En analysant ces quelques exemples, l'auteur suit l'évolution du motif jusqu'au Bas-Empire et relève les changements subis (simplification de certains détails, modification du type de tête). A recent acquisition in the Kestner Museum in Hanover serves as point of departure for the discussion of a group of four Roman bronze statuettes, naked youths with arms raised high above their heads (pl. 4-5). According to the evidence from a figured clay lamp in Tübingen (pl. 6, 5), they must once have held round tablets supporting lamps. The group apparently owes its origins to the artistic predilections of Augustean classicism, inspired by Greek works of the Severe Style. Based on the few extant examples, the author traces the development of the group down to the Late Imperial period; details were simplified over time, and the type of head was occasionally modified.
