Abstract

Since it was recognized by Hungarian social scientists that private production continues to play an important role in the Hungarian economy and society, mostly in the form of supplementary work after the working hours in the main job and first of all in agriculture, repeated attempts have been made to measure the extent of the activities that could be included in the concept of the second economy, their importance in the GDP and in the personal income of the households and their role in social differentiation. This paper gives some new data on the second economy on the basis of a survey conducted in 1988 and attempts to analyze the tendencies of development by comparing the data available since the 1960s. These problems gained increased importance in 1989 and 1990 from the viewpoint of the question of whether the existing second economy could be a basis from which a market-dominated private economy could develop and become the dominating sector in Hungary.
