Abstract

Based on the excavation report by F. Turville-Petre, cremated skeletons uncovered in Kebara cave were attributed to layer C which contained a microlithic industry later named Kebaran by D. Garrod. Due to burning, carbon char from these skeletons was suitable for both ∂¹³C analysis and ¹⁴C dating. Previous study of the carbon char provided ∂¹³C values in the region of -20.0 to -22.0 ‰. A new radiocarbon date of 12,470 ± 180 B.P. for a bone sample indicates that these skeletons were actually of early Natufian age. Taken together, the ∂¹³C and ¹⁴C data indicate that marine foods contributed little to the diet of Natufian humans at the site.
