This introduction aims at providing the frame for contextualising the diverse contributions that make up the special issue of the Journal. Starting from an account of the long route we travelled to organise such an unusual event in the Italian context, we point out the common thread underlying all the papers, each touching on and tackling disparate and wide ranging issues concerning the theme of the conference, which may be summarised in the motto "putting people first". They provide interesting suggestions also for those working on themes concerning biodiversity, heritage, intercultural dialogue, intellectual property, and commons in Italy.
