Abstract

This paper deals with the new megalodontid genus, Rhaetomegalodon Végh-Neubrandt 1969. Rhaetomegalodon contains most of the species in Paramegalodus Kutassy 1934, all of which are restricted to the Rhaetic. New discoveries of Rhaetomegalodon are described from the easternmost part of the northern Limestone Alps, south of Vienna. The megalodontids occur here in bedded Dachstein Limestone, and indicate a position in the Rhaetic, probably Upper Rhaetian. The discovery site at Piesting (Lower Austria) is the type locality of the „Starhemberg Beds“, which are red limestone fissure fillings in the Dachstein Limestone. Because of their fauna, these possibly synsedimentary fissure fillings have long been considered as Rhaetian; now their position in the Upper Rhaetian appears to be probable. In conclusion, the new subspecies Rhaetomegalodon bajotensis alpinus is described, and the hitherto known occurrences of Rhaetomegalodon in the Eastern Alps are surveyed.
